My whole life I have been the husky kid and then the fat adult. I remember while growing up and shopping for clothes with my mom, we always had to look for the husky jeans. I wasn’t an inactive kid. My brother and I played outside all the time. Video games hadn’t been invented yet, and even we couldn’t afford them even when they were. We would ride our bikes everywhere and play pick-up games of football, soccer, baseball, whatever was going on. I just liked to eat! There was one moment I remember when I was about 4 or 5 years old. My family was at a breakfast restaurant, and I literally finished my food, my parents food and my brother’s food that was on their plates. I recall my dad being very proud that I was such a good eater, and of course I wanted to make hime proud. Also, did I mention I just like to eat!?

Fast forward a few years later and I was probably in the best shape of my early life. I played soccer from the time I was 5 until I was a junior in high school. My sophomore year I was in great shape for soccer. I remember we had two practices each day, twice a day for two weeks before school started. The first practice was always conditioning and the second was skills. The soccer field we practiced at was about 3 miles from my house and not having a license or a ride I had to ride my brother’s crappy mountain bike to and from practice 4 times a day. Well, that got me into awesome shape. Add a little bit of a growth spurt, and I was pretty lean and in-shape. My soccer playing days pretty much ended with my junior year as I felt like I wanted my senior year to be easy and I was burned out from playing so long. I still regret not playing my senior year, but it is what it is at this point. My biggest regret was not keeping up some kind of exercise routine or fitness program.

Jump another few years (like 16) and I am now married with two kids. I have a great life, but when I see myself in pictures or a mirror, a part of me dies. I am now 320 pounds. About 140 to 170 pounds over weight depending on which charts you look at. I feel like I am not in terrible shape but the scale doesn’t lie. New Years Eve 2013, I decided that 2014 was going to be the year of me. I was going to spend the next year (at least) doing things and changing my life for the better. For me. For my wife. For my kids. I had to make a change. My plans did not quite work out exactly as planned. I and the kids developed strep throat. Then I got bronchitis, then pneumonia. The first two months of 2014 were pretty much spent recovering from all the sickness. March 8th, my cousin Melissa got married and my wife and I went to the wedding. We had our picture taken and when I looked at it, I was just sick to my stomach with how I looked.

The very next day, I bought a book. I bought the “Super Shred: The Big Results Diet: 4 Weeks, 20 Pounds, Lose It Faster!” by Ian K. Smith. One thing I have always hated about diets is trying to figure out what to eat. I hate planning. I want something to tell me to eat this at this time. That is what this book did for me. It is a 4-week plan and I did it twice in row. I lost 30 pounds the first month doing the meal plan and exercising (elliptical, walking on treadmill). That first 30 pounds was instrumental in keeping me going. I saw for the first time that I could actually do it. I had tried Weight Watchers and many other diets in the past and I would loose a few pounds and then couldn’t stick to the diet and gained 2-3 times back what I had lost. After the the first 8 weeks or so, I had kind of figured out how the book was having me eat and what was working. I started to use the MyFitneesPal app on my phone to track my calorie intake as well as set calorie and exercise goals. This has helped me out tremendously. I highly recommend the app to anyone that needs to loose weight and doesn’t have dietary restrictions. It is so nice to see at a glance how much you have eaten and to be honest with yourself in how much you have eaten. I will do a full review on these and a lot of other items I have used and will use in the future.

About a month (maybe less) into this whole experience, I started to try and run a little on the treadmill at the gym. I remember those first days when running for even a minute was impossible! But, I kept at it. It wasn’t too long between loosing the weight and building cardio on the elliptical machine that I was able to run a mile, then 2, then 3, then a 5K on the treadmill….in 47 minutes! Now that is generally very slow. The average male my age should be able to do a 5K in about 30 minutes. I didn’t care. I was running and I was getting better. I had cut my time down to 42 minutes or so on the treadmill, and by then the weather was nice outside. I loved running on the treadmill. I liked seeing exactly how fast I was going, exactly what my time was and how much further I had to go. I am a numbers guy and that kept my head in the game. My wife kept begging me to run outside with her, but being a fat guy and not in good shape I was embarrassed. I didn’t want to do it. She finally convinced me and it was alright the first time. By the third I was enjoying it and looked forward to running outside. Now I mentioned that I am a numbers guy and it was about this time I discovered GPS watches. Oh I was hooked! The running outside was awesome and even more awesome was being able to use a GPS watch to track exactly how far I went, my speed, how far I had to go, my heart rate, elevation, everything! So now a days I hate running on a treadmill but will if I must. I really prefer running outside, even if it is cold.

So now this brings us to the present. and as of today, 12/02/2014, I am 208 pounds. I lost 112 pounds in just under 9 months. I am not to where I want to be quite yet. I would like to be in the 190 range, would love to be in the 180 range. But I am happy with what I have achieved so far. So. why am I telling you all this. Well, there are a couple of reasons. First and foremost, I am damn proud of what I have accomplished! It took a lot of hard work to get to this point, and I know it will take a lot of hard work the rest of my life to finish and then maintain my goal. I am hoping that by sharing with you, it will help me to stay true to my course. Second, I hope that just one person will be inspired to know that they can accomplish anything. I never thought I would be able to loose weight. NEVER. It always seemed impossible or there were excuses I could come up with to not do it. This can be true in any part of one’s life but especially in their health. Health always seems to take a back seat to other things in life. Don’t let it. If it is important to you, you can do it.

So what will this site contain? I honestly have no idea! I am sure it will have my training runs and things I did. I am sure it will have races I am planning on doing and then after race reports on how they went. I am sure I will share articles from many of the different sources I read to help me. I plan to review a lot of the gadgets and equipment as well as apps and websites I have used and will use to help me along the way. Beyond that, I am really not sure.
